Sri Lankan August – Week 1, Utterly delicious but with a big bump

For August we decided to try our hand at Sri Lankan food. Sri Lanka is a tiny island southeast of the southern tip of India, and once went by the name of Ceylon.

While it certainly shares common elements with Indian food, Sri Lankan cuisine is quite different. As a renowned spice island, Sri Lankan food has been influenced by countries around the globe. The food is spicy, colourful and exploding with flavour.

We got off to a good start on our Sri Lankan adventure, but things soon went awry as we had to deal with the news that our gorgeous dog Willow has lymphoma, a highly aggressive form of canine cancer. Looking at her you’d never know there was anything wrong, she’s bright, energetic and happy. Yet without treatment she’d be gone in weeks. So we’ve opted for chemotherapy, supported with herbal remedies and supplements. Lymphoma is a cancer that does respond well to treatment in the majority of cases, so we’re staying positive, or doing our best. Read More →

Germanic June – Week 4, feasting our way through the cold

We galloped through the final week of our Germanic adventure, and yet again ran out of time to try everything we wanted to!

Contrary to expectation a month of vegan Germanic food hard wasn’t hard to do. Veganising traditional dishes wasn’t that hard, and there were plenty of vegetable side dishes to choose from. Along the way I learned just how much I love caraway seeds, how delicious cabbage can be, and developed an appreciation for celery – an ingredient I didn’t often use.

German Split Pea Soup
With the weather being wet, grey and cold I decided to make a German version of one of my favourite soups – green split pea. The version I usually make is Italian and includes fresh peas and mint. This was more like pea & ham soup, according to Steve anyway – I don’t recall ever having it before I became vegetarian. One of the great things was just how simple it was, a few ingredients thrown into the slow cooker, and later that evening it was ready to eat. To go with it made some pretzel bread rolls. They’re quite simple to make. Read More →

Malay-Indo May – Week 3, too much food, too little time

As usual we’re having a hard time trying everything we’d like to in the limited time available. There’s just so much to try!

I like to make sure we try some of the more well-known dishes – such as the gado gado this week – as well as some of the lesser known, plus be a bit creative on our own. Asian guacamole anyone?

These little Indonesian potato fritters (patties) are easy to make, and are a delicious snack, starter or accompaniment to a main meal. Pieces of potato are roasted and mashed then mixed with a spice paste (that you can whip together in a few minutes in a mini food processor) and finally rolled into palm-sized patties and fried or baked. I chose to cook them in the oven. They reheat really well, either in the oven or in a pan on the stove. Read More →
