Where do you get your calcium?

When most people think of calcium rich foods, they tend to think of dairy. And yes, dairy, especially cheese is high in calcium. However, there are an abundance of plant foods that are rich in calcium too.

What is calcium and why do we need it?

Calcium is the most abundant mineral found in the human body, 99% of which is stored in our bones and teeth, and its primary job is to keep them hard and strong. Calcium deficiency can lead to soft weak bones, and osteoporosis later in life.

Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption and is also essential for bone health (so make sure you’re getting enough sun), whereas sodium causes calcium loss, so keep your salt intake to the minimum.

Where do you get your vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is absolutely essential to our health. While our bodies are able to store it for quite a long time, regular consumption of B12 is the best way to ensure you don’t become deficient. B12 is absorbed most efficiently when you have small amounts frequently, rather than less frequent larger doses.

“In people who can absorb vitamin B12, small amounts (in line with the recommended dietary intake) and frequent (daily) doses appear to be more effective than infrequent large doses, including intramuscular injections.”

What is vitamin B12?

Very simply, vitamin B12 is not actually a single vitamin but the name given to a group of specific water-soluble vitamins which all contain cobalt, and is the only metabolite ( a substance produced during metabolism) to contain cobalt.

No plant or animal can produce B12. It is produced by certain bacteria, and while we do have some bacteria in our intestines that are capable of producing B12, it’s not currently known how much is produced or how well it is able to be absorbed. Where do you get your iron?

In the late 80’s and early to mid 90’s this was the question I was most often asked as a vegetarian and then vegan. Of course, this was also the same time as a massive campaign was running about women and iron levels, encouraging them to eat more beef.

What is iron and why do we need it?

Iron is a mineral that we need to serve two main functions. The first is to help the red blood cells transport oxygen around the body, and the second is to help break down fats and carbohydrates into carbon dioxide and water, and thus produce energy.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world and means there is insufficient oxygen in the blood to be transported to the cells and results in weakness, fatigue and poor immunity among other symptoms. A chronic deficiency causes anaemia.  Read More →
